What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is what you do so that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and other AI assistants can read your website, understand it, and name it when someone asks for a recommendation. Here is what it means in plain words, how it differs from SEO, and what to do first.

Short answer: Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a website easy for AI assistants and AI search to read, understand, quote and recommend. It is also called AI SEO, LLM SEO or AI search optimization. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: crawlers must be able to open your pages, the text must be in the HTML, and the page must say plainly what the business is. On top of that, GEO adds consistency across your pages, answers to the questions buyers ask, and actions an AI agent can complete. Unvibe checks all of it on your live site.

What “generative engine” means

A traditional search engine returns a list of links and lets you choose. A generative engine writes an answer. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and the AI answers inside search products are all generative engines: you ask a question, and they reply with a paragraph, a shortlist or a recommendation, sometimes with the pages they used.

That changes what “being found” means. There is no page two. If you are in the answer, a buyer hears your name. If you are not, you do not exist for that question. GEO is the practice of improving the odds that you are in it, and that what it says about you is right.

GEO vs SEO

They overlap a lot. The difference is what the system is trying to do with your page.

Do not throw away your SEO work. A crawlable site, clear titles, a sitemap and honest content help both. GEO adds the parts SEO often ignored.

What is different about GEO

1. Some AI crawlers do not run JavaScript

Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML your server sends. A site that builds its text in the browser can look perfect to you and empty to them. This catches many sites built with AI coding tools. We explain it in Why ChatGPT can’t see your vibe-coded app.

2. A contradiction is a reason to skip you

A visitor might not notice that your homepage says “from $9” and your pricing page says $12. A machine reads both and has to choose, or hedge, or leave you out. Prices are the most common case.

3. Buyers ask specific questions

“Do you take my insurance?”, “Does it work with my accounting tool?”, “Is there a free plan?” An assistant recommends the business whose page answers directly. Writing those answers down is one of the highest-value GEO tasks.

4. Agents act, not just read

More assistants can follow a link, fill in a form or start a sign-up for the person asking. A button that only works through JavaScript, or a vague label, stops them. See Can an AI agent use your website?

5. Other sites speak for you

Assistants do not rely only on your own pages. They may also use reviews, directories and comparison articles. Being described well in those places is part of GEO, and it is the part you control least.

The five ways AI fails on a site

When we audit a site we ask one question: why could an AI fail to read, understand, trust, recommend or use this business? Those five are a useful map.

It fails to…Typical causeFirst fix
Readrobots.txt or a firewall blocks AI crawlers; the text is drawn by JavaScriptAllow AI search crawlers; put the text in the HTML. See letting AI search in
UnderstandA slogan instead of a description; no structured data; a template title left in placeSay plainly what it is and who it is for in the title, description and headline. See Does AI know what your business is?
TrustPrices or claims that disagree; nobody named behind the business; no proof AI can citeMake every page agree; add an About page and one piece of verifiable proof
RecommendNo readable price; no concrete reason to choose you; buyer questions unansweredPublish a price or range, state specific advantages, answer the questions in plain sentences

A GEO checklist for an afternoon

1. See what a crawler receives

View the page source of your homepage, not “Inspect”. Is your headline in it? Your prices? If not, fix that first, because nothing else matters until AI can read the page.

2. Check robots.txt and your firewall

Open yourdomain/robots.txt. Make sure the search crawlers (such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) are not blocked, and check your CDN’s bot settings too.

3. Rewrite the first screen

Title, description, headline and first paragraph should say what you are, who you are for and the main thing you do. No slogans.

4. Publish prices as text

A pricing page linked from your menu, with each plan’s name, price and what it includes.

5. Answer the buyer questions

Write the four to six questions people in your market ask before choosing, and answer each in the first sentence under the question.

6. Make the main action a real link

“Start free” or “Book an appointment”, pointing at a page that loads without logging in.

7. Add structured data

One JSON-LD block that says what the business is, with the same name, price and details as the page.

8. Ask the assistants

Ask a few buyer questions without naming yourself, and note whether you appear. Repeat in a few weeks. Here is how to do it properly.

Where Unvibe fits

You can do the whole checklist by hand. Unvibe does it against your live site and keeps checking.

GEO, checked on your real site

  • The audit: reads your site the way AI crawlers do and answers “why could AI fail to read, understand, trust, recommend or use this business?” Each finding shows what it saw, why it matters, the exact change and how it will verify it.
  • The score: 17 checks across crawler access, how AI understands you and what an agent can do. See how the checkup works.
  • Buyer questions: the audit works out your market from your pages and lists the questions buyers in it ask, saying which your pages answer.
  • AI mentions and weekly tracking (paid plans): ask AI your buyer questions and record whether you are named, in what position, and who is named instead.

Check what AI sees on my site

GEO has no guarantees: no tool can make an assistant recommend you, and answers change between runs. What you can do is remove the reasons it can’t. More in the methodology.

Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Search engines still send people to websites, and the basics of SEO (crawlable pages, clear titles, a sitemap, useful content) help AI assistants too. GEO adds the parts that matter when an answer is written instead of a list of links.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is usually about structuring content so it can be used as a direct answer. GEO is broader: it also covers whether AI can read your site, trust it, recommend it and complete actions on it.

How long does GEO take to work?

Fixes that let AI read your site take effect as soon as crawlers revisit it. Whether assistants then recommend you is not something anyone can promise or time, so measure it over weeks by asking the same questions and recording the answers.
