Short answer: AI works out your market from your own pages: the headline, what you offer and to whom, your prices, the names of your pages and your structured data. If no sentence states the market, it is reading between the lines. Write one plain sentence that says what you are, who it is for and, if you serve a place, where. Then repeat it in the heading, title, description, first paragraph and structured data. Unvibe’s checkup now shows how it read your niche, the sentence it read it from, and how sure it is.
The cover-the-logo test
Open your homepage. Cover the logo. Read only the words and ask: if a stranger had only this page, what would they say your business is?
Not “it looks nice”. The specifics: which market, which kind of product or service, for whom, and where. A dental practice in a named town. Invoicing software for freelancers. A shop selling handmade candles.
Plenty of well-designed sites fail this. They have a clever headline, a lovely photo and a “Book now” button, and not one sentence that says what they are. A person can fill the gap from the photos and the context. An AI reading the page text can’t see the photos.
How AI decides what market you are in
There is no secret signal. It reads what is on the page, the same material a human would use, and it settles on the most likely answer. When Unvibe works out a site’s niche, these are the places it looks:
- The headline, and the first thing the page says.
- What is offered, and to whom.
- The prices. A price list says a lot about the market.
- The names of the pages in your sitemap.
/insurancesays something./page-2doesn’t. - Structured data, the JSON-LD block that describes the business to machines.
Two things come before all of that. The text has to be in the HTML in the first place: crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot generally don’t run JavaScript, so a page that draws itself in the browser can read as nearly empty (we cover that in Why ChatGPT can’t see your vibe-coded app). And the business is judged from the pages, not from what an AI vaguely remembers about you. If your site is thin, there is nothing to build a confident answer on.
Six signs AI is guessing
You can usually spot these yourself in a couple of minutes.
- The headline is a tagline. “Where every smile tells a story” could be a dentist, a photographer or a greeting card brand.
- The category word never appears. You call yourself a “platform”, a “solution” or a “studio” but never say what of.
- The audience is missing. “For everyone” and “for teams” are the same as no audience.
- The place is missing. For a local business, no town or region in the text means no area to read.
- A template left its mark. A page title like “Vite + React” or “Untitled” says nothing, and site builders sometimes leave them behind.
- Your pages disagree. The homepage says one thing, the pricing page implies another, and the structured data describes the page instead of the business.
Why it matters: the market is the starting point for everything that follows. Which rivals you get weighed against, which questions buyers ask about you, which reasons to choose you count as strong. If the market is a guess, all of that is built on the guess.
Say it plainly: a before and after
A made-up example, to show the shape of the fix. A dental practice:
| Where | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Where every smile tells a story | A family dental practice in Riverton |
| Title | Home | Bright Smile | Bright Smile: family dentist in Riverton, accepting new patients |
| Description | Welcome to our website. | Check-ups, hygiene and orthodontics for families in Riverton. Most insurance plans accepted. |
| Pages | /services-2 | /insurance, /prices |
Nothing about the “after” is clever. That is the point. The market, the audience and the area are all in the first thing anyone reads.
Five steps you can do today
1. Read your homepage cold
Do the cover-the-logo test and write down the market, category, audience and area you would give a stranger. If you struggle to fill one in, so will an AI.
2. Write one plain sentence
“[Business] is a [category] for [audience] in [place].” Ugly on purpose. You can make it nicer in the body copy, but this sentence is the one to anchor everything else.
3. Put it where AI reads first
The main heading, the page title, the meta description, the first paragraph, and the description in your structured data. Use the same words in each. For a local business, add the address and area as text, not only in an image or a map.
4. Remove contradictions
If the homepage says “for freelancers” and the pricing page says “for agencies”, pick one or say plainly that it is both. Check that prices on the page match prices in your structured data.
5. Test it
Paste only your page text into an AI assistant and ask: “Which market is this business in, and which sentence told you?” If it hesitates, hedges or quotes something irrelevant, your page isn’t saying it yet. Then fix the sentence and ask again.
What Unvibe does with this
The steps above work without any tool. If you want it done and checked for you, this is what the checkup does as of today.
How AI reads your niche
- Works out your niche from your own pages: market, category, audience and, for businesses that serve a place, area. Each one comes with the sentence it was read from.
- Says how sure it is. “Sure” needs a sentence on your site that states the market. If it can only guess, the card says what your pages leave out and the category check fails.
- Does not fill fixes with a guess. When the market is unclear, the fixes keep placeholders and the audit asks you to say it plainly.
- Builds the rest around the market: what buyers in it compare, who they weigh you against, and the questions they ask. These come from what the AI knows about the market, not from your pages, and the card says so.
Every quote is checked against the pages Unvibe fetched, and any quote that isn’t really there is dropped. How it works is in the checkup docs and the methodology.
Worth knowing: the AI reading is one input, and the score also comes from fixed rules about what crawlers can fetch and read. A confident reading of your niche means AI can tell what you are. It doesn’t guarantee any assistant will recommend you.
Questions
Do I need to tell Unvibe what my niche is?
No. If you leave it empty, the first checkup the AI is reasonably sure about fills in the niche and audience for you. A niche you typed yourself is never changed. If the AI reads your pages differently, that is shown as a finding rather than quietly overwritten.
What happens when AI can only guess my market?
The category check fails and the audit asks you to say what you are plainly. The fixes keep placeholders instead of being filled with a guess.
Where does “what buyers compare” come from?
From what the AI knows about the market, not from your pages. The report labels it that way, so you can tell your own evidence from general market knowledge.
